Collagen
INCI · Hydrolyzed Collagen · also Hydrolyzed collagen peptides, Collagen amino acids
How it works
Topical collagen used in cosmetics is hydrolyzed into small peptide fragments, since intact collagen molecules are far too large to penetrate skin. These fragments act primarily as humectants, sitting on the surface and within the upper layers to draw in and hold moisture, forming a light, breathable film that reduces water loss. Some smaller peptide fragments may also act as signaling molecules that encourage fibroblasts to support the skin's own collagen production, though this is a secondary, more modest effect than the hydration benefit.
The evidence
Most robust clinical evidence for collagen's anti-aging benefit comes from oral hydrolyzed collagen supplementation trials showing improved skin elasticity and hydration over several months, not from topical application. Topical collagen's benefit is best supported as a humectant and film-former rather than a true collagen-replacement therapy, and I'm careful to set that expectation with patients who assume the cream itself rebuilds their dermis.
Suitability
Good for dry, dehydrated, and mature skin seeking a rich, plumping hydrator. It layers comfortably under occlusive moisturizers and is generally well tolerated by sensitive skin, with a very low irritation profile overall.
Concentration
No standardized effective percentage exists for topical collagen; efficacy depends heavily on peptide size and formulation quality, so judge products by overall hydration performance and texture rather than a listed percentage on the label.
Conflicts & combinations
No known conflicts. Pairs well with hyaluronic acid and other peptides for a layered hydration-and-firming routine that addresses both surface moisture and long-term skin support.

Does topical collagen actually work?
It works well as a hydrator and skin-conditioning agent, but it cannot rebuild your skin's own collagen directly since the molecule is too large to penetrate intact.
Is collagen better as a supplement or a cream?
Oral hydrolyzed collagen has stronger clinical evidence for improving skin elasticity; topical collagen mainly hydrates and conditions the surface.
Can collagen skincare reduce wrinkles?
It can improve surface hydration and plumpness, which softens the look of fine lines, but it isn't a substitute for actives like retinoids.
Is collagen vegan?
No, hydrolyzed collagen is typically sourced from animal tissue, though vegan marine-free alternatives exist under other names.
Is collagen safe during pregnancy?
Yes, topical collagen is considered safe during pregnancy.
