Madecassoside

INCI · Madecassoside · also Centella asiatica saponin, madecassic acid glycoside

How it works

Madecassoside is one of the key active triterpenoid compounds isolated from Centella asiatica, alongside asiaticoside and madecassic acid. It works by down-regulating inflammatory mediators and stimulating collagen synthesis at the wound site, which supports faster, calmer healing of irritated or compromised skin. It is essentially a concentrated, purified version of what makes whole-plant centella extract effective, isolated specifically because it appears to carry much of the anti-inflammatory activity of the whole plant.

The evidence

Research on Centella-derived triterpenoids, including madecassoside, shows consistent anti-inflammatory and wound-healing activity in both cell and clinical models. This is one area of “cica” skincare where I feel the evidence genuinely supports the marketing — madecassoside's healing and redness-reducing effects are better substantiated than many trend-driven soothing ingredients. I find it particularly useful clinically as an adjunct after laser treatments or aggressive exfoliation, where visible recovery time is the main outcome patients care about.

Suitability

  • Ideal for post-procedure, sunburned, or barrier-compromised skin
  • Well tolerated by sensitive and acne-prone skin
  • Suitable for dry and combination skin needing calming support
  • Use with caution in pregnancy given limited dedicated safety data, despite its natural origin

Concentration

Formulas typically use madecassoside between 0.01% and 1%, often standardized within broader Centella asiatica extract complexes. Korean “cica” creams popularized concentrations that emphasize the total triterpenoid complex rather than madecassoside in isolation, which is worth knowing when comparing ingredient lists across brands.

Conflicts & combinations

  • Pairs naturally with whole centella asiatica and gotu kola extracts
  • Combines well with allantoin and panthenol for barrier-recovery routines
  • No known conflicts with actives; often used specifically to offset their irritation
  • A sensible nightly addition during retinoid or acid introduction periods

Frequently asked
What is the difference between madecassoside and centella asiatica extract?

Madecassoside is one specific purified compound within centella asiatica extract, which contains a broader mix of similar triterpenoids.

Is madecassoside good for acne scars?

It supports the skin's healing process and reduces redness, which can help post-acne marks fade more evenly, though it is not a pigment-correcting ingredient on its own.

Why is madecassoside in so many Korean skincare products?

It's the key active behind popular 'cica' creams, valued for calming irritation and supporting barrier repair.

Can madecassoside be used with retinol?

Yes, it is often paired with retinol specifically to reduce associated redness and irritation.

Is madecassoside safe for sensitive skin?

Yes, it is generally very well tolerated, though anyone with a known Centella allergy should patch test first.
